Men’s SHED Week 2024
Media Release
National Shed Week 1-7 September
Next week is National Shed Week raising awareness of the critical role that Men’s Sheds play in Tasmanian Communities.
The Men’s Shed Movement in Tasmania continues to grow and thrive, providing safe places in Tasmanian Communities for men to enjoy the company of other men, have a laugh, make mates and learn new skills.
Tasmanian Men’s Shed Association (TMSA) President Robert McKenzie said ‘Men time plays a critical role in men’s health and well- being, especially older men. We strongly recognise and support the fact that men will share their health concerns and problems with their mates.
They discuss their issues in a different way – quite often this happens when they are working on a project, it’s a natural way for men to communicate’ he said.
Men’s Sheds can provide the missing link in effectively engaging men in understanding the importance of looking after their health and well-being. They provide a safe and comfortable environment where men can talk with other men about their health and in fact any other issues that might be bothering them.
‘Our Dr Shed, Bryan Walpole continues to state that Loneliness is very harmful to health and well-being. It is widely recognised now that social connections especially as we age, have huge health benefits. Men often lose their ‘tribe’ when they leave the work force and that’s where Men’s Sheds play a huge role in overcoming loneliness and isolation’ Mr McKenzie said.
During this week it will be ‘business as usual’ in Tasmanian Sheds with National Shed Week being a good reminder of just how important Sheds are.
‘I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Tasmanian Government and Minister Jaensch for their ongoing support and belief in all that we do for Tasmanian Men’ he said.
During the week TMSA will launch ‘Shed Radio’ the first in a series of podcasts capturing men’s stories.
