Men’s SHED Week 2023
This week is Men’s Shed Week, celebrating 30 years of Men’s Sheds in Australia. The Tasmanian Men’s Shed Association (TMSA) is the Peak Body for Tasmanian Men’s Sheds and with there now being 71 Sheds in Tasmania, the demand for Men to have places to ‘make mates’ continues to grow.
Men’s Sheds are a health program for Men. TMSA understands that men thrive when they have purpose and in a place where they can enjoy the company of other men. Healthy men, means healthy Tasmanian Communities.
With Tasmania leading the country with male suicide numbers, the regular feedback TMSA receives from Member Sheds is that sheds save lives. Older, isolated men, especially those that have lost their wife or partner are the highest at-risk group.
TMSA President David Seen said ‘Recent studies into male suicide in Tasmania shows that loneliness is high on the list of contributing factors. The traditional meeting plans for men have diminished dramatically over recent decades and Men’s Sheds give men somewhere to get together, to make things and make mates’.
‘We are a grassroots organisation that ‘gives back’ so much to Tasmanian Communities. Men’s Sheds provide a place where men can regain that sense of purpose that many lose, especially following retirement.’
‘Tasmanian Men’s Sheds are a Men’s Health and Well-Being Program, let's be clear, and as our sheds continue to grow in numbers, it's obvious that we provide that safe place for men to get together and make new mates’ he said.
